THE COURSES
*REAL ClUB DE GOLF de TENERIFE (18 holes; 5,750 m, par-71)
Situated in the north of the island and 10 miles from Santa Cruz, the island’s capital, the club was founded circa 1932 and is the second oldest golf club in Spain.
British in appearance and character, it lies at an elevation of 800 feet, offers superb views and is more wooded than its southern counterparts.
Real is a members’ club but is open to visitors each week-day morning.
*AMARILLA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB (18 holes, 6,077 m, par-72)
A coastal course, links-style in parts, undulating in others, this design by Donald Steel is technically demanding but offers options from the forward tees. It’s easy to see why Donald rates it as one of his favourite projects.
The ocean is visible from most fairways and among several outstanding holes are the par three 5th and the 12th, both of which demand carries over the ocean shoreline. A memorable course that is complimented by a new pitch and putt par three course.
*GOLF COSTA ADEJE (18 holes, 6,201 m, par-72)
This course offers great fun for all levels of ability. Wide fairways hemmed by bunkers of black sand offer generous targets but the real challenge comes with the approach to cunningly contoured greens that are invariably slightly elevated and tightly defended.
Laid over a former banana plantation, the course is unique for its multi-levelled fairways lined with retaining walls. A lovely site is enhanced by several spectacular holes by the ocean.
Pepe Gancedo, the architect, is building a third loop, scheduled to open in mid-June, along with a new clubhouse.
*GOLF DEL SUR (27 holes, 5,578 m, par-72)
Another jewel by Pepe Gancedo, Golf del Sur has staged several European Tour events and is maintained to consistently high standards.
A lush course lined with a variety of plants and trees, it is marked by its island bunkers of black volcanic sand and rocky backdrops to several greens.
One hole, No. 3 on the North course, has been ranked among the top 500 in world golf. Several others are notable and the course, in any combination of loops, has great playability.
*GOLF LAS AMERICAS (18 holes, 6,039 m, par-71)
Arguably the best conditioned course in Tenerife with impeccable greens and lush, wide fairways, it also may be the most “player-friendly” with big targets on every shot.
Designed by the John Jacobs Group, it is situated in a gently sloping ampitheatre with hills on three sides. A picturesque setting, it has several lakes fed by streams and waterfalls.
First rate practice facilities are matched by the luxurious clubhouse that has every facility. A day spent here would be huge fun in every respect.
*GOLF LOS PALOS (9 holes, 913m, par-27)
The professional record here is 24. Enough said? The longest hole is 145 metres, the shortest 85. But bare statistics do scant justice to a mouth-watering little gem designed by Jose Maria Olazabal’s Integral Design team.
Set in nine hectares (about 22 acres) with streams and two lakes in play, one may whiz around in an hour, so good players frequently use this for practice.
Popular with families and beginners because of a substantial teaching academy with two resident professionals.
