THE town’s elders have an admirable philosophy, doubtless encouraged by a population determined to maintain the old ways and traditions.
There are few hotels in what is a bustling resort in the new section of town, so package holidaymakers are rare. Accommodations are largely available in up-market apartments and villas and these tend to be the domain of Spanish visitors to whom Javea is a favourite holiday haven.
The old part of town is a working fishing port, as it has been for centuries, and is a charming attraction on its own right.
All this and a climate to die for! Javea stands on a headland equidistant from the airports of Alicante and Valencia, both about an hour distant by motorway, and it is the eastern-most point of the country.
Thus each day it receives the first rays of sunshine to bathe the Spanish mainland and, being coastal, has an enviably temperate climate with more than 300 days of sunshine each year and an average daily temperature of 20C.
In August, for instance, the maximum temperature is 30c, the minimum 20. Winter can bring day time temperatures of around 16C, falling to 7C on occasion. Spring and autumn are simply idyllic, although a sweater will sometimes be required evening wear.
Topographically, Jávea is typical of the varied coastline along the Costa Blanca. Sailing, diving and swimming can bring unique experiences hereabouts.
To the north, divers may investigate the depths of the San Antonio Cape marine nature reserve; there are boats for hire at the port, where sailing classes are also available. In summer time it's possible to sail a boat down the coast as far as Dénia.
The rocky coast with crystal clear waters to the south of the port is perfect for diving whilst the long beach of fine sand further south is ideal for sunbathing and has windsurfs and paddle boats for rent.
The coast is even more beautiful and unspoiled between San Martín and La Nao and between the islands of Descubridor and Portichol where the sea bed is ideal for diving.
The stretch of coast line ends with the golden sands and clear waters of the beautiful Granadella cove that is heaven for beach lovers and families.
All this activity is dependant, of course, upon your being able to tear yourself away from your Posh Villa.
Life should be full of such challenges!
