SPAIN - JAVEA

Why Javea is Spain’s Favourite Holiday Hide-Away

A Posh Villa holiday will bring the best of all worlds -- and there's golf!

Winston Churchill would have loved Posh Villas. “I’m a person of simple tastes,” he declared. “I like the best of everything.”

Thus the great man would have been quite at home at any one of the Posh Villas collection near the ancient town of Javea on the Costa Blanca, the eastern coast of Spain. There are seven of them available for holiday rental, architectural jewels scattered around an exclusive suburb in the hills that overlook the town and the sea.

Designed to cater for corporate or family groups, each villa is set in a secure enclave of two or three acres: each has a pool as the focal point of expansive gardens, with various patios and balconies for al fresco entertaining, plus hidden corners for reading and quiet contemplation.

One could imagine Churchill ensconced in such seclusion, indulging his passions for landscape painting and writing, pausing occasionally to renew the glass at his elbow or to break for lunch under a parasol by the pool-side bar. Doubtless he would have been presented with a supply of his favourite brandy, especially ordered to mark his visit. It would be typical of the attention to management detail that makes a holiday here so memorable.

He would have been particularly taken, one feels, with Villa Maravi, the first of the collection to be acquired by their London-based owners and the model for later acquisitions and others now being constructed.

It was built by its architect for his own use, a three storey Spanish-style country house, a luxuriously appointed family home with all the personal accoutrements of domestic residence: television and music systems, photographs, ornaments and paintings and other wall decorations, plus a small library and a full range of crockery, crystal and cutlery in a state-of-the-art kitchen. The ambience suggests the owners are in town, perhaps, and could be back at any moment. But delighted guests feel immediately at home after being shown around by the owners’ English manager.

Set on a hill top with views to the sea and with a floor area of 3,500 square feet, Villa Maravi is surrounded by secluded gardens, has six air conditioned bedrooms, most en suite, with second floor balconies leading off a large sitting-dining room. One bedroom is tucked away in a tower, three others are on the ground floor and adjacent to a club-style bar complete with fully stocked wine racks and all the equipment and beverage required for a jolly night or three. There’s a pool-side pavilion with another bar, barbecue equipment and shower and toilet facilities.

Who needs the beach? Lazy days of pure hedonism are de rigeur here!

Leaving nothing to chance, the house is serviced by an English speaking couple who live nearby. They are hotel trained and can provide most services you would expect at a five star hotel: arranging baby sitting services, shopping and restaurant and taxi booking for those clients who choose to dine out (don’t even think about driving if you’re drinking: the local police, bless 'em, are fond of spot checks…)

All the villas are designed, equipped and furnished to five star standards and are the perfect alternative for those seeking exclusivity, divorced from the impersonality of de luxe hotels. All are upwards of 3,000 square feet on two or three floors, with at least six en suite bedrooms. Most rooms will have private balconies giving views over the pool and gardens strewn with comfortable outdoor furniture.

It’s an idyllic setting for care-free family holidays. Teenagers could be bored but they’d have to work at it! For them, there’s no shortage of night life in town, only minutes away by taxi; families with youngsters would find distractions aplenty at the nearby beach; and there are literally dozens of good quality restaurants in close proximity for those who prefer this to self-catering.

And for golfers there’s a choice of three nearby courses of some quality, plus Javea GC, a nine holer that’s the local equivalent of a good quality municipal. Information, directions and contact telephone numbers to all of these, and a list of local points of interest, are contained in each villa’s guide book, along with recommendations by the management and comments by previous guests. Nothing is overlooked.
