The New Academy
IF you tackle golf correctly and warm up with a bucket of balls you’ll spot the new La Manga golf academy at the far end of the range.
Situated near the clubhouse, it has two indoor studios complete with the latest electronic and video gadgetry, plus the world’s most advanced digital swing analysers and simulators.
There’s an exclusive 18 bay practice range with two large under-cover teaching bays, and a short game area.
So the team of three award-winning teaching professionals are armed to transform the humblest swing into one of silky poetry in motion.
Well, not quite; but satisfaction is guaranteed if you commit yourself to their five day regime. Beginners, hackers and scratch men alike have felt the benefit – a recent visitor was Miguel Angel Jimenez, who popped in for a tune-up en route to winning his next million...
Don’t be deterred by the reference to five days: the course occupies 15 hours split into three hours each week-day morning on a different aspect of the game, from the putter to the driver via chipping, pitching and bunker play; from basic skills, rules, strategy and tactics, to reading greens, match play tips and selecting suitable equipment.
For group clinics, each pro takes a maximum of six pupils through the five day programme, or private single lessons, including on-course playing lessons, are available after noon each day and at weekends.
For the youngsters, there are shorter courses, of five and seven hours’ duration, available in school holiday periods only.
And for family fun there’s a pretty par 47 pitch and putt course so that all can practice their new-found skills.
The Spa.
Pampering, anyone?
IT was Oscar Wilde who said there was nothing wrong with giving one’s self over to a spot of hedonism. The old sybarite would have been beside himself on a day spent at La Manga’s new spa. Talk about sumptuous…
This is where the beautiful people go for their make-over and if you care to list all the treatments you’d expect to find in a world class spa you’ll find them here. It’s a feast for all the senses, not least the eyes.
Consider the setting, for starters: the spa is in that new white building atop the hill above the village at Las Lomas. It’s the highest point on the estate and the views from the terrace at sunset are to die for.
Inside is wall to wall opulence; even the high tech gym is five star and fitted out with the ultimate in exercise gear. There are saunas, of course, and steam rooms and jacuzzis and a swimming pool.
There are spa suites for various forms of massage, Chinese reflexology; facials and aromatherapy, tanning and waxing and simply relaxing.
There are herbal and mineral baths, body scrubs, foot treatments, mud wraps and a hot stone massage that’s part of a four hour package.
You could spend 30 minutes on a basic facial treatment or a full day getting the works…
You could check in alone or with your best beloved, to share what may be a unique experience of pampering and tranquility. Oscar would have loved it.
