USA - Charleston Hurry On Down, You'all...
IF YOU need a reason to visit Charleston there's not much hope for you, unless of course such good fortune has so far eluded you. In which case, you can't begin to guess what you've been missing all this time, so best make tracks, smartly...
The blessings are legion, even discounting world class golf, but several stand out. The first is the all-pervading warmth of the hospitality.
Because this is South Carolina, this is Red Carpet country. Here the welcome would stop run-away horses. This is The South, after all. They've got a reputation to uphold.
Here they do things in the grand manner, oozing style. When they say "y'all come back now" they're not merely being polite. They want a date and time so they can meet your flight and crack a bottle or two before the gourmandising begins at dinner.
Make that dinner at The Charleston Place, the most gracious hotel in America's most elegant city, and you've cornered the market in holiday highlights. It simply doesn't come any better.
Charleston, indeed, is one of the major attractions of the State, visually and historically. It is venerable, refined and oozing old world courtesies and charm, and with countless attractions, largely architectural, cultural and historical. It's a joy to behold.
Here were heard the first shots in the Civil War -- one may take a ferry across the harbour to Fort Sumpter where they were fired -- and the city has remained largely unchanged, except for the better, ever since. It's a beautifully preserved and living link with history.
What's more, they've elevated the good life into an art form that stops just short of mass hedonism. Lord knows where the natives go for their holidays!
The setting helps, of course, plus an idyllic climate and a relaxed pace that's a by-product of those lazy summer days before air conditioning came along.
So if you're desperate to unwind, and prefer a city in which to achieve that happy state, here's the place to go. Simply fly in, tune in and drop out: your batteries will be re-charged in no time. You'll have a holiday to recall fondly on cold winter nights.
When you've exhausted the sight-seeing and the gourmandising there's some outstanding golf, too, with a clutch of clubs convenient for the city -- among them the oldest golf club in America -- and three major resorts no more than 30 minutes away, at Wild Dunes, Seabrook Island and Kiawah Island.
