DARREN'S BIG WIN HIT THE BOOKIES WHERE IT HURTS!

The bookies took a hammering in the Irish town of Dungannon (pop 14,000) when Darren Clarke won the Open Championship at Royal St George's in July.

The reason: Darren is a life long member of the Dungannon Golf Club and most of the 600 members backed him to win the big one... at 150 to 1! "We always back him," a member said recently. "This time we won."

Many members won enough to pay for a family holiday; most won several hundred pounds, a few won a thousand and one person walked away smiling with several thousand.

Although Darren now lives near Portrush he is still a member of Dungannon, which he joined as a boy aged seven. He spent his his amateur career at the pretty parkland course an hour south of Belfast and the clubhouse has a Darren Clarke Room exhibiting his trophies and photographs of his victories, as well as a Darren Clarke Golf Academy.

He still visits frequently -- he arrived shortly after winning the Open and his two sons are also members -- and has been made an honorary lifetime member for his services to the club. He designed four new holes when the club acquired additional land for expansion, and his big win has brought a stream of visitors anxious to play the home course of the Open champion.

So everyone is happy --- except the bookies!
